acupuncture & holistic medicine for pets

Acupuncture in animals was first used on the horses of Chinese emperors over 2,000 years ago and has been widely used in the treatment of horses in America for decades. It is very effective for a wide range of ailments in animals. This treatment is often used for pain and chronic disease, movement disorders such as hip dysplasia, arthritis and other painful symptoms especially in older dogs and cats.

Acupuncture works through helping to maintain the health of the body. The basic principles of acupuncture are the same in animals as in humans. Chinese medical theory states that disease is the result of a blockage in energy flow (Qi or Chi) along pathways in the body. Inserting needles into these pathways unblocks the energy and restores health. I combine the use of a laser during the session to enhance the effectiveness of the needles.

Though many people are a bit squeamish about needles, most dogs don't mind at all. However, I do not treat aggressive dogs and do not muzzle animals for their sessions. Muzzling the animal causes stress and defeats the purpose of the treatment.

Please note that I do treat cats, however they are not as cooperative as dogs.

Nutrition and herbal therapy play a crucial role in canine health as well. An herbal and nutritional consultation is part of the initial treatment package. It's an opportunity for us to discuss your pet's diet and try to find ways that food is either hurting or helping the healing process.

I do not sell any herbal products. You will be given a list of recommendations specific to your pet's needs and information on how to use them and places to purchase them.

herbs & homeopathic medicine

Chinese herbal medicine is a 2,000 year old tradition using naturally occurring substances — including herbs — to enhance one's health and vitality. As opposed to Western medicine, the foundation of this approach is to support the body's natural self-healing mechanisms and abilities.

I am a licensed herbalist with significant training in herbal  & homeopathic medicine with over 30 years experience. Since each patient has different needs, I carefully select herbal formulas, liniments or homeopathic remedies that are specific to your pet's needs.

After the first session for your pet, you will receive an email with a list of these recommendation along with informative videos that are available for free on the Four Paws Acupuncture YouTube Channel.

laser acupuncture

Laser Acupuncture is the latest innovation in the 2,500 year old medical tradition of acupuncture. It uses low-energy laser beams — instead of traditional acupuncture needles — on specific points of your body to unblock and restore the healthy flow of Qi (energy) through the body's meridians. This treatment is completely painless, and just as effective as a traditional acupuncture session.

I combine laser acupuncture with acupuncture in all of my sessions with animals and when needed with people. During the session a laser will be used on points on the body that are specific for reducing pain, promoting circulation and boosting the immune system. It does not require the animal to be still. Most dogs love it and sometimes cats want to chase it!

Laser is included in all animal acupuncture sessions at no extra cost.

The many benefits of laser acupuncture include:

  • Relieves pain!
  • Moves energy
  • Stimulates the acu-points
  • Moves energy through the meridians
  • Improves circulation
  • Stress and tension relief
  • Increased energy levels
  • Aids digestion
  • Greater sense of overall health and well-being

acupressure

Acupressure is based on one the most ancient principles of healing — that simply touching a specific point on the body will release stress and improve health in the body. In an acupressure session, I apply firm pressure directly to these "points" on your body or your pet's, which  muscle tension and improves circulation. This simple and powerful technique has been shown to very effective in treating pain, headaches, backaches, and even insomnia.

Acupressure is combined with every acupuncture session. Basic acupressure instructions are given to all pet owners so that they may continue to help speed along their pet's recovery process at home in between sessions.

reiki

Reiki is a Japanese form of energy work that cleanses and balances the energy system in the body. As a result, the body's natural self-healing mechanisms strengthen, helping to establish optimum health. During a session, I work directly with your energy field to remove blockages, detoxify your system, and restore your vital life force energy. Reiki utilizes a gentle laying on of hands to conduct the necessary energy force between us. The benefits of Reiki range from the release of habitual mental/emotional stress to alleviating chronic pain.

I combine Reiki into all of my acupuncture sessions. There is no extra charge for this.
