Healthy Pupsicle Recipe for your Hot Dog!

Recipe for Chicken Soup for the Doggie Soul Pupsicles

Make sure the broth DOES NOT contain Onions!!!!!!!!

During this hot humid weather i have been giving my dog patients a pupsicle made from chicken soup which is frozen inside plastic containers with lids.The dogs seem to love just licking on these as if they were eating a popsicle. It keeps them occupied during their sessions too. Some dogs will try to take the frozen block out of the container once it has melted a bit. You can put it in their food bowl.

Make sure your dog is supervised while eating these. Some dogs, especially food obsessed labs will like to try to put the entire container in their mouth! You may want to break up the frozen block into smaller pieces for those dogs.

You can add other ingredients to this. I cook like my Italian grandmothers, which means i do not like to measure things. Since i tend to burn things left unattended, using a medium sized crock pot is the easiest method for me. If you use a larger crock pot add a bit more of each of these ingredients.

Add about 2 of the 32 oz.containers of organic chicken broth to the crock pot with filtered water. Wolfgang Puck makes an onion free broth OR you could add your own chicken broth. (Trade Joes makes an onion-free turkey broth too.) Make sure there are no onions in it.

Add about 5-8 peeled then shredded carrots. (you can buy them at Trader Joes already shredded!)

Add 2-4 stalks of finely chopped celery (not necessary!)

About 2 tablespoons of dry parsley if you have it. (Very good for stinky dog breath)

Add 3-4 pieces of free range frozen or fresh boneless chicken. You can add more chicken if you like.

Mix it up as best as you can. Put the lid on and cook on low for about 7 hours or on high for about 4 hours. Mix the soup during the day and try to break up the chicken.

Let it cool for about 45 minutes. Then spoon the mixture into tupperware type plastic containers. Put the lids on securely. Turn upside down and place in freezer. This way the chicken will freeze at the top of the container. Let freeze over night. Allow the container to thaw for about 10 minutes to make it easier for the dog to lick.

Do not give this frozen pupsicle to your dog during cold weather!

Whew! We are having a horrid heat wave in New England. Here are a few tips to keep your dogs cool. Remember.. we are wearing fur so it is way hotter for us than you!

Seven Tips to Cool off a Hot Dog

1. PLEASE! Never, ever leave your pets in a parked car in the summer, even if you crack the windows or park in the shade. A car temperature can rise to 150F or more in just a few minutes. This is the number one cause of canine heat stroke.

2. Always have plenty of fresh water handy for your pets. Carry a bottle of water and a bowl for your dog when walking him or her on a hot day. Add SmartWater to your dog’s bowl which has electrolytes and can help prevent dehydration.

3. Be on the look-out for signs of heatstroke. Symptoms include rapid breathing, a dazed look, very hot skin and twitching muscles. Wrap your pet in a cool, but NOT cold, wet towel. Get them to the vet as soon as possible as heatstroke can be fatal.

4. Be careful not to exercise dogs during the hottest part of the day. Also don’t worry if they are eating less on hot days as it is a normal canine reaction to heat.

5. Put a kiddie pool for dogs to cool off and play in on those hot summer days. They are inexpensive and can be found at most stores like Target.

6. Try to keep your pets indoors during the hottest part of the day, in a room with air conditioning or circulating fans if possible.

7. Short haired dogs or those who have just been shaved are prone to sunburn just like us. Especially early in the summer, try to limit your dog’s exposure to the sun.

More Horror Stories About Wheat & Gluten

My pet human Beta-chic loves to rant about how bad it is for dogs to eat wheat or anything with gluten in it. She found this informative article on Huffington Post. Though it is written about the effect of gluten on humans, the negative symptoms of eating gluten also applies to dogs.

Many dogs foods are filled with wheat and grains with gluten. Have your pet humans read the ingredients carefully. If you want to set my pet human over the edge while she is treating your dog, then mention that you feed your dog pizza crust and bread!

It is sad that i will never enjoy a nice piece of pizza crust unless i am able to find one in the park when nobody is watching.

Something you’re eating may be killing you, and you probably don’t even know it!

If you eat cheeseburgers or French fries all the time or drink six sodas a day, you likely know you are shortening your life. But eating a nice dark, crunchy slice of whole wheat bread–how could that be bad for you?

Well, bread contains gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, spelt, kamut, and oats. It is hidden in pizza, pasta, bread, wraps, rolls, and most processed foods. Clearly, gluten is a staple of the American diet.

What most people don’t know is that gluten can cause serious health complications for many. You may be at risk even if you don’t have full blown celiac disease.

In today’s blog I want to reveal the truth about gluten, explain the dangers, and provide you with a simple system that will help you determine whether or not gluten is a problem for you.

he Dangers of Gluten

A recent large study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that people with diagnosed, undiagnosed, and “latent” celiac disease or gluten sensitivity had a higher risk of death, mostly from heart disease and cancer. (i)

This study looked at almost 30,00 patients from 1969 to 2008 and examined deaths in three groups: Those with full-blown celiac disease, those with inflammation of their intestine but not full-blown celiac disease, and those with latent celiac disease or gluten sensitivity (elevated gluten antibodies but negative intestinal biopsy).

The findings were dramatic. There was a 39 percent increased risk of death in those with celiac disease, 72 percent increased risk in those with gut inflammation related to gluten, and 35 percent increased risk in those with gluten sensitivity but no celiac disease.

This is ground-breaking research that proves you don’t have to have full-blown celiac disease with a positive intestinal biopsy (which is what conventional thinking tells us) to have serious health problems and complications–even death–from eating gluten.

Yet an estimated 99 percent of people who have a problem with eating gluten don’t even know it. They ascribe their ill health or symptoms to something else–not gluten sensitivity, which is 100 percent curable.

And here’s some more shocking news …

Another study comparing the blood of 10,000 people from 50 years ago to 10,000 people today found that the incidences of full-blown celiac disease increased by 400 percent (elevated TTG antibodies) during that time period. (ii) If we saw a 400 percent increase in heart disease or cancer, this would be headline news. But we hear almost nothing about this. I will explain why I think that increase has occurred in a moment. First, let’s explore the economic cost of this hidden epidemic.

Undiagnosed gluten problems cost the American healthcare system oodles of money. Dr. Peter Green, Professor of Clinical Medicine for the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University studied all 10 million subscribers to CIGNA and found those who were correctly diagnosed with celiac disease used fewer medical services and reduced their healthcare costs by more than 30 perecnt. (iii) The problem is that only one percent of those with the problem were actually diagnosed. That means 99 percent are walking around suffering without knowing it, costing the healthcare system millions of dollars.

And it’s not just a few who suffer, but millions. Far more people have gluten sensitivity than you think–especially those who are chronically ill. The most serious form of allergy to gluten, celiac disease, affects one in 100 people, or three million Americans, most of who don’t know they have it. But milder forms of gluten sensitivity are even more common and may affect up to one-third of the American population.

Why haven’t you heard much about this?

Well, actually you have, but you just don’t realize it. Celiac disease and gluten sensitivity masquerade as dozens and dozens of other diseases with different names.

Gluten Sensitivity: One Cause, Many Diseases

A review paper in The New England Journal of Medicine listed 55 “diseases” that can be caused by eating gluten. (iv) These include osteoporosis, irritable bowel disease, inflammatory bowel disease, anemia, cancer, fatigue, canker sores, (v) and rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and almost all other autoimmune diseases. Gluten is also linked to many psychiatric (vi) and neurological diseases, including anxiety, depression, (vii) schizophrenia, (viii) dementia, (ix) migraines, epilepsy, and neuropathy (nerve damage). (x) It has also been linked to autism.(ix)

Food for thought…

You are what you eat applies to us dogs too. We like variety and need both crunchie and moist food.

My pet humans have finally figured out a combination of foods that my delicate body likes. Being an abandoned dog and being fed unhealthy food for so long has had an odd effect on my intestines. I now enjoy the Artemis kibble along with a piece of baked chicken each meal. (Sometimes with pumpkin or potatoes on Monday since the trash trucks give me diarrhea.) I take my herbs and supplements in Greek yogurt. And if i am good there are healthy treats such as the Solid Gold cookies or an egg. Since i have been on this new diet i have gained 7 pounds and even grew a bit taller!

Here are a few dog food brands that we feel good about recommending. Every dog’s needs are different so do some research on the ingredients before feeding your dog anything new. It also takes time to adjust to a new brand.

One of my favorite spots to nap is on the balcony among the peppermint. It smells so good. And i think it must keep those pesky bugs away. I simply adore it. Of course i am from the South where this plant is revered by proper old ladies who drink tea and mint juleps!

Peppermint has been used medicinally for ages to treat tummy aches, indigestion, breathing and respiratory problems, headache, nausea, fever, stomach and bowel spasms. It is also great for stinky dog breath. My pet human aka Beta-chic chops up a small leaf of peppermint everyday and adds it to my food…. not that i would ever have stinky breath.

The latin name for Peppermint is Herba Mentae Haplocalycis and in Chinese it is called Bo He. It is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine in several herbal formulas. In the Chinese Herbal Medicine Materia Medica by Bensky & Gamble, it is listed in the category of Cool, Acrid Herbs That Release the Exterior. (And for all those herb geeks it’s properties are acrid, aromatic and cooling.) Please note that the Materia Medica is the herbal bible memorized by all acupuncture students preparing for licensing boards.

Bo He has several uses such as:
* Treating Wind Heat with symptoms of fever, headache and cough.

* Clears wind heat in the head, eyes and throat. Vents rashes and can even be used in early stages of measles. This of course is for people with measles!

* And it ….. allows constrained Liver qi to flow freely. Something of course only those trained in TCM would understand. But it does sound powerful. Beta-chic seems to think most of those people living in the state of Massachusetts suffer from some strange ailment called liver qi stagnation. I have no idea what she means. Perhaps it is the way they drive? Or the way they are always in a hurry? Maybe the snappishness – is that a word? This is probably why she treats dogs and not people. Liver qi stagnation seems to be an epidemic here in New England according to her. ( And sometimes after a long day of driving she even seems to suffer from it. But of course i would never say that out loud!) Fortunately most dogs do not suffer from this affliction.

So, i am wondering if everyone took the time to enjoy a nice cup of peppermint tea, might they be nicer during this horridly hot weather? Or perhaps they could just add a sprig of peppermint to their ice tea? I am not sure if it would help their driving but we can only hope it does!

It’s the hot dog days of summer. It has been horribly hot here in Salem these past few days. Taking long walks without water can be dangerous for dogs, especially while wearing a black fur coat. So the pet humans bought me this oh so cool water bottle called the Gulpy Pet Water Dispenser. It is easy to carry. Beta-chic carries it in her purse and it has a cool little bowl attached so its easy to sip from. You can find them at most local pet stores.

Oh and please use filtered water not the tap water for your dogs!
